This is a classic clip from the GP in Namur. The story goes that Swedish champion Hakan Carlqvist always said he would like to get a lead big enough to stop at the cafe in Namur.
In 1988 the chance finally came. After coming in first during practice, he was confident enough going into the race that he said to his brother that if Carlqvist would have a 20 second lead or more when 25 minutes had passed of the race, he should have a beer ready for him at the Chalet du Monument. The rest is history:
Sadly, the organisers of the event have decided to call off the 2008 Dakar rally due to the instability in Sub Saharan Africa along with direct terrorist threats.
It´s sad to see that the organisers have decided to take this route since it is basically letting the terrorists succeed in their goal. I’m sure the people intending to participate in the event were aware of the areas they were going into and the risks they were taking. The Dakar rally has always been one of the toughest events around and has claimed many lives during its courses.
